5 Dental Myths We Hear All the Time (And What’s Actually True)

Myth 1: If nothing hurts, nothing is wrong

Cavities and gum disease can develop without pain. Exams and appropriate imaging can identify problems before symptoms appear. Your visit schedule should reflect your risks rather than pain alone.

Myths 2 and 3: Bleeding is normal, and harder brushing cleans better

Bleeding during brushing or flossing often signals gum inflammation and deserves attention if it persists. Keep cleaning gently and ask your dentist about the cause. Stopping all cleaning can allow more plaque to build up.

Heavy pressure and stiff bristles can damage gums and wear tooth surfaces. A soft brush and thorough, gentle technique are more useful than force. A pressure sensor may help if you tend to scrub.

Myths 4 and 5: Sugar-free means tooth-safe, and mouthwash replaces floss

Sugar-free drinks may still be acidic and contribute to enamel erosion. Frequency matters: sipping an acidic drink throughout the day exposes teeth repeatedly. Water is a practical default between meals.

Mouthwash can support a routine, but it does not replace brushing or physically cleaning between teeth. Choose products for a specific need and ask your dental team which tools make sense for your mouth.
