Understanding and Managing Teeth Grinding with Your Silver Lake Dentist
Recognizing grinding and clenching
Bruxism is grinding or clenching the teeth, during sleep or while awake. You may notice worn or chipped teeth, jaw fatigue, morning soreness or headaches. These symptoms can have other causes, so an examination helps clarify what is happening.
Look at the contributing factors
Stress, habits, some medicines and sleep-related conditions may contribute. Tell your dentist about sleep symptoms and medicines; do not stop a prescription on your own. Snoring, breathing pauses or daytime sleepiness may warrant medical assessment for sleep apnea.
For daytime clenching, practice noticing when your teeth are pressed together. At rest, the teeth generally do not need to touch. Reminders, relaxation strategies and reducing habitual gum chewing may help, depending on your symptoms.
Protect teeth and review the response
A professionally fitted nightguard can protect teeth for selected patients, but it does not necessarily stop grinding or treat an underlying sleep disorder. The appliance and your bite need follow-up. Ask about the most suitable design before buying a generic guard. Arrange care for a broken tooth, persistent pain or difficulty opening your jaw.
